What’s your greatest weakness | Interview tips

Have you ever been interviewed for a job and asked, “What’s your greatest weakness?” Of course you have. We all have. It’s one of those furniture-piece questions that interviewers love to throw out there. (It should be thrown out, period.)

the weakest link

Some interview coaches might tell you to turn the question around so that your “weakness” is really a positive. “I work too hard,” or “I care too much about details.” Say that to your interviewer and wait for that expression that says, “Yeah, right.”

Here’s a better way to answer. Tell the interviewer about something you’d actually like to improve about yourself. And then say what you’ve been doing to reach that goal. “I’ve always wanted to increase my knowledge of wines so I’ve been studying to achieve the next level as a certified sommelier.” Or, “I’ve gotten very good at my basic skills, now I’d like to apply them to more creative dishes.”

Your interviewer is going to be much more impressed that you are interested in improving yourself than hearing a stock answer that no one believes anyway.
